Lots of Bees
so after collecting a swarm last week, it got more hetic, but in a good way, I recieved a message of a swarm in the next village, and duley went and boxed it up, the lady that called me, (now my new bee buddy) is also a beekeeper, but she already had six hives, these were not from her hives, but the prison thats located on the Island and keeps around a hundred hives, I left the poly nuc in situ, so she could close them up at dusk and we would'nt leave any behind, I arranged to collect them the next morning, of the course the next day, another swarm arrived in the same garden, I'd run out of poly nucs, thankfully louise had a cardboard one to loan me, on returning that first swarm to the allotment, it made me start to think, I needed a second out apiary, as i did'nt want to overload the allotment.
I placed an advert on social media, asking if anyone had a spare bit of garden or field, and was amazed at the response I got, I settled up meeting a retired couple living not far from where the swarms were collected from, myself and louise (as I needed a navigator after getting lost) went to view what was being offered, a seperate garden from their house, secure and brimming with wild flowers and fruit trees, atrue Garden of England, and enough space for quite a few hives if we go that far.
then this afternoon, looking at bee group pages, again on social media, someone had ordered a 5 frame nuc of buckfast bees, with a 2019 mated queen, without asking his landlord for permission to keep a hive, and was then refused, he had offered them FREE OF CHARGE to anyone that could offer them a good home, he was located a 40 minute drive away, so popped over and picked them up.
In all my years beekeeping, all of my colonies have been captured swarms, mongrels or heinz 57 for want of a better word, and I've had some right angry bees in that time, this nuc of buckfast, were so easy to hive, being very docile, I can now see the difference. Im liking buckfast very much,
